Paradise Valley Standard

Paradise Valley Landscape Design Built for the Estate Standard

There are landscaping companies that work in Paradise Valley, and there are companies built for it. Lone Star Landscaping is the latter. Since our founding, we have designed and installed landscape environments for some of the most architecturally significant properties in the Valley - estates in Silverleaf, privately gated compounds along the base of Camelback, and custom homes where the outdoor space is as considered as every room inside.

Paradise Valley is not a forgiving environment for ordinary landscaping. The desert sun is relentless, the caliche can be brutal, the HOA requirements in gated communities are specific, and the clients are discerning. We know this market because we work in it every week. This page covers our landscape design and installation services as they apply specifically to Paradise Valley - the materials, the process, the plant palette, and the results our clients expect and receive.

Full Service

What Full-Service Landscape Design and Installation Means

When we say full-service, we mean we handle everything from the first grading survey to the final walk-through - no hand-offs, no subcontracted portions, no coordination gaps. For Paradise Valley projects specifically, that typically includes:

What we do not offer: lawn mowing, routine maintenance, or irrigation repair on projects we did not install. Lone Star is a design-build firm. We create and build environments - we do not maintain them.

Site analysis and grading assessment

Conceptual design and detailed construction drawings

Permit coordination with the Town of Paradise Valley

Drainage engineering and implementation

Irrigation system design and installation

Hardscape installation - decomposed granite, flagstone, travertine, concrete, and natural stone

Planting - specimen trees, native desert plants, accent color, and turf alternatives

Boulders and natural stone features

Low-voltage landscape lighting (see our dedicated lighting page )

Outdoor kitchen rough-ins and finished installations (see our outdoor kitchens page )

Design Process

The Lone Star Design Process

Luxury landscape projects in Paradise Valley don't happen on impulse. They require detailed planning, precise coordination, and a clear understanding of what the homeowner is trying to achieve architecturally, functionally, and aesthetically. Here is how we approach it.

Step 1: Site Visit and Consultation

We start with a site visit - not a sales call. Our project leads walk the property with the homeowner, assess grading, drainage, sun exposure, existing plant material worth preserving, and any architectural constraints. We ask about how the outdoor space will be used, what budget range the client has in mind, and what's worked or not worked in previous landscapes. This conversation shapes everything that follows.

Step 2: Design Development

Our design team produces a detailed landscape plan that includes materials, plant selections, irrigation layout, lighting zones, and hardscape specifications. For Paradise Valley projects, we present multiple design options before finalizing - clients at this level want to see alternatives, not just one approach. Renderings or 3D visuals are available for larger projects.

Step 3: Permitting

The Town of Paradise Valley has specific permitting requirements, and gated communities like Silverleaf and DC Ranch have additional HOA review processes. We handle all of it. Our team has submitted and received approval for dozens of PV permits and understands the timeline and documentation requirements.

Step 4: Installation

We manage our own crews. Grading, drainage, irrigation, hardscape, planting, and lighting are all installed under our supervision. On combined projects with Copperleaf Pools, we coordinate directly with their team so the sequencing is right and the finished environment integrates cleanly rather than looking like two separate contractors worked independently.

Step 5: Final Walk-Through

Before we consider a project complete, we walk the property with the homeowner, review irrigation programming, confirm lighting zones are set correctly, and address anything that isn't exactly right. Our standard is that the client should feel the project exceeded expectations - not just met them.

Plant Palette

Plant Palette for Paradise Valley Properties

We design with the Sonoran Desert, not against it. Paradise Valley's elevation, soil conditions, and water restrictions favor a plant palette built around desert-adapted species - but that doesn't mean sparse or boring. The right plant selections create color, texture, shade, movement, and privacy while performing reliably in the Valley's extreme summer heat.

Specimen Trees

Large-scale properties in Paradise Valley often anchor their landscapes with specimen trees - mature Ironwood, Palo Brea, Desert Willow, or sculptural Saguaro cactus that give the property a sense of permanence and scale that cannot be achieved with newly installed smaller material. We source specimen trees from specialty nurseries and manage the installation of large-caliper trees with appropriate equipment.

Desert-Adapted Shrubs and Accent Plants

Our plant lists for PV projects typically include Agave, Dasylirion, Hesperaloe, Bougainvillea (in appropriate microclimate zones), Brittlebush, Ruellia, Desert Marigold, and other species that provide seasonal color without high water demand. We design plant groupings for visual interest across all four seasons, which is more nuanced than it sounds in the desert.

Turf Alternatives

With the ongoing water restrictions in Maricopa County and Paradise Valley's own conservation focus, we design landscapes that do not rely on traditional turf as a primary ground cover. Decomposed granite, flagstone, and drought-tolerant groundcovers can achieve clean, finished looks without the water demand of grass. For clients who want a lawn area - for dogs, grandchildren, or entertaining - we can design limited synthetic turf zones that look and feel natural.

Hardscape Materials

Hardscape Materials for PV Estates

The hardscape - everything that isn't planted - defines the permanence and quality of a landscape. Paradise Valley properties almost universally feature high-end hardscape materials, and our installations reflect that standard.

For detailed information on pavers and travertine specifically, see our Paradise Valley Pavers & Travertine page.

Travertine and natural stone - imported and domestic options, tumbled and honed finishes, ideal for pool surrounds and main patio areas

Flagstone - irregular and cut, Arizona flagstone and imported options, used for pathways, patios, and accent areas

Decomposed granite - premium grades in multiple colorways, compacted base, sealed or unsealed depending on application

Concrete - broom finish, exposed aggregate, and stamped options for driveways, entries, and secondary patio areas

Boulders and natural rock - saguaro-boot boulders, Sonoran granite, and other regional stone used for drainage swales, planting berms, and dry creek features

Project Intelligence

The Details That Make Paradise Valley Landscapes Last

Drainage and Grading - The Work That Doesn't Photograph

Paradise Valley sits in a bowl surrounded by mountains, and during the monsoon season, water movement is not a minor consideration. It is a primary engineering challenge. We have seen landscapes destroyed by inadequate drainage planning, and we have fixed drainage problems created by other contractors. Our approach to grading and drainage is to solve it permanently, not temporarily.

Every Lone Star project begins with a grading survey and drainage assessment. We engineer swales, catch basins, French drains, and retention areas as needed to ensure that water flows where we want it to flow - not where physics decides to send it. This work is invisible once the project is finished, but it is the difference between a landscape that lasts and one that erodes.

Working in Gated Communities

A significant portion of Paradise Valley's luxury properties are within gated communities - Silverleaf, The Boulders (adjacent), and various private gated enclaves. Working in these communities requires contractor registration, insurance certificates at specific coverage levels, approved work hours, and in many cases HOA design review prior to permitting.

We have completed projects in virtually every major gated community in and around Paradise Valley. We understand the administrative requirements and don't present them to clients as problems - we handle them as a normal part of our process.

Coordinating With Copperleaf Pools

Many of our Paradise Valley clients are building or remodeling both their landscape and their pool simultaneously. We work closely with our sister company, Copperleaf Pools, on combined projects. When both companies are involved, the coordination happens between our teams - not between two separate companies the homeowner is managing independently.

The practical effect is that the pool surround, patio materials, planting plan, and lighting integrate as a single environment rather than two separate scopes that happen to touch each other. For clients considering both a landscape remodel and a pool project, starting both conversations at the same time - even if they stage the construction - produces a better result.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions

How long does a full landscape installation take in Paradise Valley?

For a full estate-scale landscape installation - including hardscape, planting, irrigation, lighting, and drainage - typical timelines run 8 to 14 weeks depending on project scope, permit timeline, and material lead times. Permitting with the Town of Paradise Valley typically runs 3 to 6 weeks before physical work can begin. We build realistic timelines at the proposal stage so clients aren't surprised by the schedule.

Does Lone Star handle landscape design separately from installation?

We are a design-build firm, which means our design and installation are integrated. We do not offer design-only services. The design process is part of how we produce installations that perform - we design what we know how to build and build what we've designed with precision.

Can I see examples of completed Paradise Valley projects?

Yes. Our portfolio includes completed projects across Paradise Valley, and we can arrange to show you relevant projects in person in some cases. Contact us at 602-992-7827 to discuss your project and we will identify comparable completed work to share with you.

What is the typical budget range for a Lone Star landscape project in Paradise Valley?

We work on projects starting at approximately $150,000 and regularly complete projects well north of that threshold on estate-scale properties. We are transparent about budget at the initial consultation - if a scope doesn't align with our minimum, we will say so clearly so you can plan accordingly.

Do you work on new construction or only remodels?

Both. We work on new construction - coordinating with the general contractor and architect from the landscape standpoint - and on remodels of existing landscapes. New construction typically involves more coordination phases. Remodels often involve demo work before the new installation begins.

What areas other than Paradise Valley do you serve?

Our primary markets are Paradise Valley and North Scottsdale, including 85255, 85260, 85262, and 85253. Key communities include DC Ranch, Silverleaf, Desert Mountain, Troon North, Gainey Ranch, and Grayhawk. We do not serve the broader Phoenix metro for landscape installation - our focus is the luxury tier of the northeast Valley.
