Materials & Options

Paving Materials We Design With

Natural Travertine

Travertine is the defining surface material of luxury outdoor spaces in Arizona for good reason. It stays cool underfoot in summer heat, it ages beautifully, and its natural variation gives every installation a character that manufactured products can't replicate. We source high-grade travertine in a range of finishes - tumbled, brushed, honed, and chiseled - and design installations that feel native to the desert landscape rather than imported.

Architectural Pavers

For homeowners who prefer a more contemporary or geometric aesthetic, architectural pavers offer precision, uniformity, and an enormous range of size, texture, and color options. Large-format pavers in particular are increasingly popular in Paradise Valley's desert-modern estates - the clean lines and minimal grout pattern create a seamless, high-end appearance that photographs beautifully and holds up over decades.

Natural Stone

Flagstone, sandstone, quartzite, and other natural stone materials offer the most organic, site-specific aesthetic of any paving option. We use natural stone in applications ranging from pathway systems and garden steps to full patio installations where a more textured, irregular finish is the design intent.

Concrete Pavers & Belgard

Not every application calls for natural stone pricing. We also work with high-quality concrete paver systems from manufacturers like Belgard, whose top-of-line products deliver excellent durability, color consistency, and design flexibility for pool decks, driveways, and secondary outdoor areas where budget efficiency matters without sacrificing quality.

Applications

Where We Install

01

Pool decks and spa surrounds - designed to stay cool, drain properly, and connect visually with the pool finish

02

Primary patios and outdoor living areas - the main entertaining surface adjacent to the home

03

Covered patio and ramada flooring - interior-grade finish quality for covered outdoor rooms

04

Driveways and motor courts - high-load applications requiring proper base preparation and material selection

05

Pathways and garden walks - connecting elements that tie the property together

06

Steps, walls, and grade transitions - architectural hardscape elements that define space and manage elevation changes

Construction Process

How We Build It

The difference between a paver installation that lasts 30 years and one that shifts, settles, and stains within five is almost entirely in the base preparation - the part you can't see once the job is done. This is where many contractors cut corners. We don't.

We pull permits, coordinate inspections, and manage the process from demo through final clean-up. You don't need to manage us.

Site assessment and grading - proper drainage is engineered into the design, not hoped for after installation

Subbase excavation and compaction - depth and material spec'd to the load and soil conditions of your specific site

Sand or mortar setting bed - method chosen based on material, application, and climate performance requirements

Pattern and layout - executed precisely to the design drawings, with attention to cuts, transitions, and borders

Jointing and sealing - finished with appropriate polymeric sand or grout and sealer specified for the material

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions

Is travertine a good choice for pool decks in Arizona?

Yes - it's arguably the best choice. Natural travertine has a surface temperature significantly lower than concrete or dark pavers in direct Arizona sun, making it comfortable barefoot even in summer. It's also slip-resistant when properly finished and ages well in the desert climate.

How long does a paver installation last?

A properly installed paver or travertine system should last 25-30+ years with minimal maintenance. The key is subbase preparation and proper drainage. We spec every installation for the long term, not just the short-term appearance.

Can pavers be installed around an existing pool?

Yes. We do pool deck replacements regularly - removing old concrete or dated tile and installing new travertine or paver systems. We work around existing pool plumbing and equipment with care and precision.

Do you handle the permitting for hardscape in Paradise Valley?

Yes. Hardscape projects in Paradise Valley often require permits and sometimes HOA or architectural review approval. We manage the entire process and have extensive experience navigating PV's requirements.

What's the difference between tumbled and honed travertine?

Tumbled travertine has a weathered, textured surface with slightly rounded edges - very organic and casual in character. Honed travertine is smooth and flat with a consistent finish - more contemporary and formal. Both are appropriate for luxury installations; the choice depends on the aesthetic of your home and outdoor space.
