A Scottsdale Backyard Amenity Built Around Casual Luxury
Sand volleyball courts occupy a unique position in the Scottsdale luxury outdoor market - they are social, active, and visually striking in a way that more conventional backyard features are not. On a large Scottsdale lot where there is room to accommodate one, a well-designed sand volleyball court becomes the centerpiece of outdoor entertaining. The right sand, the right depth, the right drainage, and the right perimeter treatment make the difference between an amenity that gets used for decades and one that turns into a maintenance problem within a few seasons.
Lone Star Landscaping has installed sand volleyball courts across Scottsdale's largest-lot communities - Troon North, Desert Highlands, Mirabel, and similar properties where the footprint allows a full regulation or modified court without compromising the rest of the outdoor space. We treat the court design as part of the overall landscape plan, not as an isolated installation, and the result is a court that enhances the property rather than simply occupying a corner of it.
What
What Goes Into a Properly Built Sand Volleyball Court
The sand is the most critical variable in a sand volleyball court and the most commonly underspecified. The correct material is masonry sand - fine, rounded grain, free of rocks and debris, and installed at a minimum depth of 18 inches for proper play performance and injury mitigation. Some installations use as little as 8 to 10 inches of sand to reduce cost, but courts built to that specification play poorly and compress down over time. We specify and install to the standard that produces a court that actually performs.
Drainage system - the most overlooked element. Sand volleyball courts hold water if not properly drained, and standing water breeds mosquitoes and compacts the sand. We install a perforated pipe drainage system beneath the sand layer that carries water away from the court after rain events.
Court perimeter - pressure-treated timber, steel edging, or concrete curb systems contain the sand and define the court boundary. The perimeter choice affects both the visual character of the court and the long-term maintenance requirements.
Sand type and depth - we specify washed masonry sand at a minimum 18-inch depth. We source locally where possible and deliver and spread as part of the installation scope.
Post system and net - regulation net height for sand volleyball is 7 feet 11 5/8 inches for men and 7 feet 4 1/8 inches for women. We install adjustable post systems that can accommodate both heights.
Lighting - evening play is comfortable in Scottsdale from October through April. We design lighting systems for courts where evening use is anticipated.
Surrounding landscape - the perimeter of a sand volleyball court benefits from low-maintenance desert plantings that define the space without dropping debris into the playing surface. We design the surrounding landscape as part of the court scope.
Site
Site Requirements for Scottsdale Sand Volleyball Courts
A regulation sand volleyball court is 52.5 by 26.25 feet. With a surrounding play area and safety buffer, plan for a minimum of 70 by 40 feet of flat, usable space. This is achievable on many Troon North and Desert Highlands properties, as well as larger lots in Grayhawk and McCormick Ranch. We assess the available footprint during the design consultation and recommend court dimensions accordingly.
Grade is the limiting factor on many Scottsdale lots. A sand volleyball court requires a level base - significant slope requires grading and potentially retaining walls before court installation can begin. We provide a complete site assessment before any commitment and give honest recommendations about what is achievable on a given property.
Frequently Asked Questions
Common Questions
How much maintenance does a sand volleyball court require?
Less than most homeowners expect. The main tasks are occasional raking to redistribute the sand after heavy use, checking the drainage system after significant rain events, and adding sand every few years as the material naturally settles and compacts. We provide a maintenance guidance document with every court installation.
Can a sand volleyball court be combined with other outdoor amenities on a Scottsdale property?
Yes - and it frequently is. Sand volleyball courts pair naturally with outdoor kitchens, covered ramadas, and pool areas on larger Scottsdale properties. The court often becomes the focal point of an outdoor entertaining zone that includes multiple amenities. We design these combined environments regularly and the integration between elements is part of what we do.
Do Scottsdale HOAs allow sand volleyball courts?
Most do with design review approval. The primary HOA considerations are typically court visibility, lighting, and the net/post system's visual impact from neighboring properties. We prepare the submission package for HOA review communities and have experience navigating the approval process in Troon North, DC Ranch, and other governed communities.
