The Resort Amenity That Brings the Most People Together

Of all the sport surfaces we build on luxury properties, sand volleyball courts generate the most consistent social energy. There's something about a sand court that invites people in - it's approachable for every age and skill level, it's genuinely fun for parties and gatherings, and it reads as a premium resort amenity rather than a competitive sports facility. On the right property, it's one of the most valuable additions we can make.

A sand volleyball court is also a more complex installation than it looks. The sand depth, drainage design, court perimeter, and surrounding hardscape all matter for long-term performance and appearance. A court built without proper drainage retains moisture, compacts unevenly, and looks poorly maintained within a season. We build them to last and to stay looking right.

Design & Construction

How We Build a Sand Volleyball Court

Court Dimensions

A regulation outdoor volleyball court is 59 x 29.5 feet with recommended clearance of at least 10 feet on all sides, creating a total footprint of approximately 80 x 50 feet. For casual residential use, slightly smaller configurations are acceptable and we'll discuss the tradeoffs during design. The court is oriented to minimize direct sun exposure during typical play hours.

Excavation & Base

We excavate to a minimum depth of 18-24 inches to accommodate the sand layer and drainage system. The subbase is graded and compacted before any drainage infrastructure is installed. This step is the one most commonly skipped by inexperienced contractors - and the one most responsible for court failures.

Drainage System

Proper drainage is the most critical engineering element of a sand court. We install perforated drainage pipe and aggregate drainage layer beneath the sand, connected to a dedicated drainage point. Without this system, the court retains water after rain events, the sand compacts unevenly, and the court develops soft spots.

Sand Selection & Depth

Not all sand is created equal for volleyball. We specify washed, medium-grit silica sand - typically 16-18 inches of depth - that provides the right consistency for play, doesn't compact too tightly, and doesn't become excessively hot on bare feet. We avoid fine beach sand, which packs poorly, and coarse masonry sand, which is uncomfortable.

Court Perimeter & Edging

The court boundary is framed with treated lumber, concrete curb, or composite edging that defines the playing area cleanly and prevents sand migration. The perimeter transition into surrounding hardscape or landscape is designed intentionally - not left as a ragged edge.

Net System

We install regulation volleyball net systems with permanently anchored steel posts. Nets are adjustable to regulation height (7'11" men's, 7'4" women's) and are stored or removed easily during off-season.

Surrounding Hardscape & Landscape

A volleyball court surrounded by a well-designed hardscape area - a paved perimeter for spectators and a pathway to the court - and appropriate landscaping looks intentional and resort-quality. We design the surrounding area as part of the court project, not as an afterthought.

Lighting

Evening lighting extends the social life of a sand volleyball court significantly. We install LED court lighting on steel poles at appropriate heights for night play - warm enough to create ambiance, bright enough to play comfortably.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions

How much does a residential sand volleyball court cost?

A well-built sand volleyball court with proper drainage, quality sand, perimeter edging, and a regulation net system typically ranges from $30,000 to $60,000 depending on site conditions, surrounding hardscape scope, and whether lighting is included. We provide detailed project estimates after a site review.

How often does the sand need to be replaced?

Quality silica sand in a properly drained court typically lasts 8-12 years before needing to be refreshed. Sand will compact over time and lose some of its playing quality - topping off or refreshing the sand layer is a routine maintenance item, not a major project.

What happens to the court in heavy rain?

A properly drained court should shed standing water within 24-48 hours after a heavy rain event. The drainage infrastructure we install is designed for Phoenix metro rainfall patterns. Courts without proper drainage can remain wet for days.

Can a sand volleyball court be converted to another use later?

The excavation and drainage infrastructure can be repurposed for a different court type if your needs change - the investment isn't wasted. We can also design the surrounding area to be adaptable from the start if there's any uncertainty about long-term use.

Is sand volleyball appropriate for kids?

It's one of the most family-friendly sport surfaces you can build. The sand is forgiving for falls, the game is accessible for all ages, and courts don't require the precision skills that tennis or pickleball demand. Many of our clients with young children specifically request sand volleyball for this reason.
